Strikes, wipeouts, hospitals and grumpy people

Another day of activity and near chaos here in Paris. Liam and I scootered to school this AM after we could not squeeze on the sardine can tram system which is operating at 50% capacity but which has 150% more passengers. It was raining and it is late autumn so leaves still on the ground...alas a few wipeouts for Liam on the way to school. Muddy but unbowed he entered the school grounds only ten minutes late.

In the afternoon we received a call from the school nurse saying that we needed to go to the children's hospital to see Liam...he smacked his head after being pushed in the school courtyard during a recess period. He is fine - just a little sore. Looks like some kind of topple over after a tiff. The best thing about it was the service - amazingly kind and helpful doctors, interns, and staff. A 1.5 hour detailed examination, with a few tickles (for Liam, not me!), and all for 23 Euros (the price for the uninsured...shows you what can happen when society chooses to set up a public health system).

The strikes continue, the rhetoric heats up, and everyone is getting progressively more grumpy. It will be interesting to see how long this carries on...
